PoE Switch Selection Guide - PoE Switches
A PoE Switch is an Ethernet switch that sends power as well as data through the Ethernet cable. Thus eliminating the need for an external power supply for the end point device. Using one cable instead of two reduces installation time & cable clutter. PoE switches are commonly used to in conjunction with VoIP phones, wireless access points and IP surveillance equipment.
Small Business PoE Switches generally range from 4 - 48 ports. On most models all of the ports on the switch will have power over Ethernet functionality, but on some half the ports have PoE and half do not. These are generally 10-15% cheaper than the all port models and a good way to save money if you only need to power a few devices.
Enterprise PoE Switches generally range from 24 - 96 Ports. Some are modular in design for increased flexibility and fault tolerance. Redundant power supplies and, advanced QoS and Gigabit Ethernet is also available in the Enterprise category. In voice over IP deployments, often a power over Ethernet switch is used in conjunction with a battery back up system (UPS) so the connected phones will remain powered on in the event of an electrical outage.
